Creating the Partnership between Deaf Mentor Program and Arizona Hands & Voices Guide By Your Side Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program
According to the Supplement to the Joint Commision on Infant Hearing (JCIH) Position Statement Goal 11, “Families who have many contacts with adults who are D/HH exhibit a strong sense of competence with regard to raising their child who is D/HH” (2013). This presentation will share how in 2019, both the Guide By Your Side (GBYS) program Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) Guides of Arizona Hands & Voices (AZHV) and the state Deaf Mentor Program (DMP) began collaborations on how to expand the opportunities provided to families for D/HH adult involvement.
With the shared purpose of providing support to families, both programs have worked cohesively in trainings, presentations, and shared events to ensure families receive the opportunity of support from both programs. This presentation will show how this meaningful partnership allows for families to have many opportunities to benefit from D/HH adults, giving the children a greater sense of self and the families a sense of capability that they can raise their D/HH child successfully.
Both programs have goals that involve D/HH adults in the successful support of D/HH children. While some goals vary, the programs have a shared goal of providing families the tools needed to succeed in all aspects of life. Presenters will discuss how they work together and ensure families receive support from D/HH adults within both programs.
- Participants will learn the importance of providing opportunities to receive support from D/HH adults to families with D/HH children.
- Participants will learn the importance of collaboration among D/HH programs to ensure every child and family reach their highest potential
- Participants will be able to identify the strategies involved in referring families from one program to another.
