Silencing Sparta
Plutarch's portrait of Sparta, primarily but not solely in his Lycurgus, has been enormously influential and continues to capture our attention more than any other ancient description of Sparta. He has, however, in many ways silenced classical Sparta and substituted a hybrid utopian version of his own. This paper will explore the ways in which he has silenced earlier sources, whether he did so consciously or unconsciously and what the repercussions have been for our understanding of classical Sparta.
