Auditory Consultant Resource Network: Supports for Professionals Working with Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
As a result of newborn hearing screening programs and advances in hearing technology, children with hearing loss are identified earlier and thus have access to intervention services and advanced amplification technologies at earlier ages than in the past. It stands to reason that these innovations will result in improved outcomes if early intervention providers are trained in addressing hearing loss. However, despite these advances many educational professionals report the need for ongoing and updated training in the area of hearing loss in order to maintain pace with the advances in hearing technology. The Auditory Consultant Resource Network (ACRN) was established to address this need. The ACRN is a comprehension educational outreach program that is focused on addressing the needs of educational systems serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing. It is part of the many innovative services that are offered by the Lied Learning and Technology Center at Boys Town National Research Hospital. ACRN's primary focus is on developing strong local, regional, and national educational support for professionals serving children with hearing loss by using distance technology to create innovative educational exchanges. This presentation will provide an overview of ACRN's mission, services, and educational venues for enhancing service delivery models and professionals' expertise in the area of hearing loss.

Catherine Cronin Carotta Ed.D., CCC-SLP is the Associate Director of the Center for Childhood Deafness at Boys Town National Research Hospital. She is a speech-language pathologist with many years of experience in the assessment and education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing using sign and spoken language modalities. Dr. Carotta has worked in public/private school settings, hospitals, and university-based clinical programs. With a doctorate in leadership education, she works to cre¬ate learning organizations using current leadership models. She has created a teacher renewal model entitled The Work of Your Life and has authored the work, Sustaining the Spirit to Teach, Lead, Serve. She is actively involved in providing consultation to organizations regarding leadership, renewal, and services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
