Exciting Updates to the Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum (NHSTC)

The NCHAM Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum (NHSTC) was developed almost ten years ago. It is a standardized, competency-based curriculum for screeners and stakeholders, consisting of eight modules pertaining to all aspects of the newborn hearing screening process. It is built on principles from the 2007 JCIH Guidelines with the overarching goal of improving newborn hearing screening outcomes through screener buy-in, empowerment, knowledge, and skills. Hospitals, EHDI programs, and service programs in the US and abroad are utilizing it as a standardized tool for training hospital screeners and as a method for ensuring competency requirements are met and documented. In 2012 the NHSTC was updated from a DVD to a web version with built-in self-assessment tools. Data from 2000 participants were presented at the 2015 National EHDI Conference in Louisville, KY demonstrating its success in improving screener confidence and knowledge. It is currently going through its third iteration which includes an overhaul of the content, updated web technology to improve the user experience, a re-certification module and the creation of a non-hospital/outpatient screening module. This presentation will provide an overview of upcoming enhancements and changes, a data analysis update from 2015 to present and a discussion in which EHDI Coordinators will have the opportunity to share how they are utilizing the NHSTC as a quality improvement tool in their state programs.

Randi Winston-Gerson (), NCHAM, A.T. Still University, The EAR Foundation of Arizona, randiwinston@infanthearing.org;
Randi consults on a variety of EHDI related projects and serves as adjunct assistant professor at A.T. Still University. Prior to that she worked as a consulting audiologist for The EAR Foundation of Arizona and Arizona's EHDI Program since 1998. Her role included the implementation of newborn hearing and early childhood screening programs with an emphasis on program quality, systems development and best practices. During that time she served on NCHAM’s Technical Assistance Network, assisting states in Region X. Randi maintains her role as lead audiologist on the Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum (NHSTC) project and has co-authored several research articles involving newborn and early childhood screening. Randi holds doctorate of audiology, is state licensed in Arizona and a member of AAA, ASHA and the ArSHA. She also serves as director of the Arizona Special Olympics Healthy Hearing Program.
