Location tracking and content monitoring of fluid tankers with IoT Cloud
Tankers regardless of stationary/mobile require frequent parametric measurements. Manually monitoring remote storage tanks can be expensive, inefficient and sometimes impossible in hazardous conditions. Several industries will get benefitted the way IoT Cloud can monitor and feed the information to transactional, analytical and decision making systems. This paper uses a use case to demonstrate how IoTCS can be used to monitor/analyze the telemetry data from sensors attached to tankers and raise alerts in case of a threshold breach for fluid volume/ temperature change/unauthorized access. Geospatial data from the tanker movement is monitored to track their location on a map in near real-time. The device data is fed in big data stores, warehouses and ERPs for further decision making and they change the way business reacts to the events. The analytics and robotics can use the data to drive the business process to enable automation and less human dependent.
The paper talks about implementing a system where fluid level in the tanks will automatically be conveyed to the back-end ERP system for real-time monitoring of fluid volume. Near real-time location tracking can also be enabled for mobile containers.
Containers will be fitted with
- Ultrasonic sensors to accurately measure the level of fluid in them
- Temperature sensors to aid in volume calculation and/or tracking temperature changes
- Global positioning system for real-time location tracking for mobile containers
- Low Power Wide Area Networking/ cellular devices will be fitted to wirelessly send out data for remote monitoring
The gateway device will act as a communication gateway between wide range of sensors and the IoT Cloud service. In case of static containers, a single IoT Gateway device will route telemetry data for multiple containers to the IoT Cloud Service.
Alert rules are setup in IoT Cloud console to define threshold limits for fluid level. If the level goes below the threshold limit, alerts defined in the IoT console will be raised for the downstream systems to act on.
- Learn how IoT in cloud works
- Learn how IoT cloud service can feed data to ERP for decision making
