Crop Variety Selection for Planting Purposes
In this workshop session, teachers will analyze a few of the many varieties of rice, corn, and soybean seeds. Experiments will be done to show the germination process as well as the environmental effects on these varieties. This will simulate the environmental conditions that seeds must endure to germinate. This will also simulate weather related factors that row crop farmers must calculate for when choosing the variety of seeds to plant on their farm. Portions of this workshop can be used in grades ranging from 6-12 grade science classes.

I grew up on an Angus Cattle Farm in SW Arkansas. Agriculture has always been a passion of mine. I went on to attend the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville where I received a BS & MS in Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences with an emphasis in Agricultural Communications. My past jobs include working for the University of Arkansas Extension Service as an Agriculture Agent, teaching as a high school and middle school Agriculture and Science teacher. I am currently working for Virtual Arkansas where I teach students across the state of Arkansas, who are enrolled in a public school, Agriculture Business. My husband is an Agronomist and we have a small hobby row crop farm. We have two children Allison who is 7, and Aaron Paul who is 3.
