What’s New? Aligning Practice to Research (finally!) to Support Children with Microtia Atresia
A frustration for professionals and parents alike has been a lack of research to inform practice in the area of supporting young children with conductive hearing loss secondary to microtia/atresia. The overwhelming number of studies on microtia/atresia are related to surgical outcomes and/or adults, not on infants and toddlers with microtia/atresia, EHDI experiences, or language outcomes. This has left families and professionals without information or with having to interpret information from an adjacent population to inform decision making processes. Over the last few years, though, more research has been done on this population of children or related to their needs. This presentation will review recent research and guidance related to fitting guidelines and amplification benefits, speech development considerations, psychosocial development and other topics and then discuss practical uses of these studies for supporting children and their families and implications for systems and professionals.
- Participants will describe gaps in research related to young children with microtia/atresia prior to being surgical candidates
- Participants will identify important findings from recent research related to young children with microtia/atresia.
- Participants will apply findings from recent research to supporting children/families,, the EHDI system and their own practices.
