Beyond Auditory Skills: What About Speech?

Once a child receives appropriate amplification or a cochlear implant, much attention is given to developing and monitoring auditory skills. What about speech production? Are professionals and parents as familiar with speech acquisition, facilitation or remediation of production and assessment? This presentation identifies the speech stages from early vocal production to intelligibility. This includes discussion of early vocal behavior, normal development of sound acquisition and the importance of sound sequencing. It then addresses facilitation of speech development by providing practical tips and ideas along with showing materials/toys that may be used to stimulate speech development. When speech is not progressing typically, remediation is then warranted. An apraxia-like approach will be discussed that focuses on teaching kinesthetic patterns and automaticity of placement so that a child may achieve intelligible speech. In order to determine if a child is making appropriate progress, assessment is required. Informal and formal assessment tools including the Open- and Closed-set Task© by Dr. David Ertmer will be reviewed. Participants will be provided with a review of the important aspects of speech production development, ideas and materials to use for facilitation of speech production and an approach that may be used for delayed or disordered speech production. Additionally, tools for assessment will be reviewed.

  • Participants will be able to describe the stages of early vocal development and speech production.
  • Participants will be able to list at least three speech resources that may be used to facilitate or assess speech production.
  • Participants will be able to describe an approach to use with children who are demonstrating difficulty with speech development.
