Evaluating Fatherhood Education Programs for Incarcerated Minority Fathers

Using a mixed-methods approach, this study examined the outcomes and experiences of incarcerated minority fathers (n=713) who participated in InsideOut Dad, a fatherhood education program designed for incarcerated fathers. Quantitative analyses indicated that participants showed decreases in partner conflict and psychological distress, and more positive perceptions of social support from pretest to posttest. Qualitative analyses revealed that the program was positively received, with participants noting the skills they developed as a result of their participation. Findings suggest that incarcerated minority fathers can benefit from fatherhood education. These findings may inform practitioners that facilitate such programs for incarcerated fathers from historically underrepresented groups.
