The Role of the Audiologist in Nursing Education on UNHS
While the UNHS program has been successful in identifying hearing loss at an earlier age and initiating appropriate intervention to treat hearing loss in the identified children, the immense variation of training procedures used leaves confusion concerning the effectiveness that important information is relayed between the hospital personnel that conduct the UNHS. The purpose of the study is to obtain information concerning the effectiveness of a training program to equip nurses and nursing students in administering UNHS procedures, correctly recording results, and clearly explaining outcomes to parent/guardians. In order to obtain information concerning the effectiveness of an UNHS training, the program provided through the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) was used. Procedures included the nurses and nursing students complete a pre- and post-survey of their current knowledge of training procedures as well as a pre-test and post-test devised by NCHAM. Results for the nursing professionals showed significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores as well as between pre-survey and post-survey questions 1-2, 4-5, 7-8, and 10-14. Data collection for the nursing students is ongoing and will be completed in September 2016. In general, the findings of this study subjectively suggest that nursing professionals do not feel they are adequately up-to-date concerning administering and interpreting UNHS testing. Healthcare professionals are trusted with completing and documenting sensitive and significant information that has the ability to affect how their patients develop and learn. It is imperative these professionals are adequately trained to manage the amount of responsibility provided to them. Study participants who completed this specific online training made improvements in their pre- and post-testing across both objective and subjective measures. This indicates that the training model used is an effective way to update professionals' current knowledge while expanding their overall understanding.
- 1. Understand the importance of educating other professionals in regards to our profession.
- 2. Understand the importance of training nurses on UNHS.
- 3. Understand the need for continuing education for nurses on UNHS.
