Forest Grouse Research, Ecology, and Management in Western North America

In recent years we have initiated research on dusky grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) and ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) in Western U.S., primarily in Utah and Nevada. Dusky grouse are an under-studied species, especially considering the recent split of blue grouse into two species. Ruffed grouse in Western North America are also relatively under-studied compared to more central and eastern areas. Our research goals are multi-faceted and include understanding seasonal habitat selection and movements, harvest characteristics, population dynamics, and interactions with land-uses. We have radio-marked and banded dusky and ruffed grouse to meet these objectives. A sample of dusky grouse received rump-mounted GPS radios, the first documented case of this for the species. This has added a much improved resolution to habitat selection and movements in our dataset. We have been able to complete resource selection function analyses using these data to better delineate the characteristics of dusky grouse breeding and brooding habitat. We have also been able to compare brooding habitat selection to the distribution of grazing utilization, which is the predominant land-use on the study area. Like many grouse species, we have documented strong fidelity to seasonal habitats and some individuals have moved much farther distances than expected. Our studies are ongoing and we look forward to sharing future research results as we gather and analyze information from these research projects.
