Experimental study on thermal storage performance of Ba(OH)2•8H2O/copper foam composite phase change material

Due to the excellent absorbability of high porosity copper foams, a salt hydrate/copper foam composite phase change material (PCM) was prepared by using barium hydroxide octahydrate (Ba(OH)2•8H2O) as latent heat storage PCM and copper foams as supporting matrix. Latent heat storage capacity and phase transition temperature of Ba(OH)2•8H2O were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The compatibility between the PCM and the containing materials was also studied by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The result from SEM photographs indicates that barium hydroxide octahydrate and copper have a good compatibility after repeated melting/solidification cycles. An experimental setup was built to investigate heat transfer performance of barium hydroxide octahydrate with and without copper foams. The comparative study was performed with regard to the thermal storage performance of thermal storage units (TSUs) with and without copper foams under the same heat flux. The results show that high porosity metal foams not only significantly enhance the heat transfer rate of PCMs, but also effectively reduce the supercooling of salt hydrates.
