The Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum (NHSTC): New Tools and Opportunities for Hospitals and State EHDI Programs
The NHSTC was developed to help hospitals and EHDI stakeholders standardize training and offer a comprehensive foundation from which screeners can provide quality newborn hearing screening and follow-up as a standard of care to all babies and families. In an effort to improve accessibility the course was re-created in a web based format. The newly formatted curriculum allows learners to move through the course at their own pace and increases user friendliness.It is easily available and accessible on the infanthearing.org website in 4 different formats. This presentation will discuss the various training formats, how state EHDI programs and hospitals can utilize them as a sustainable approach to ongoing training and the pro’s and con’s of each format. Information about CEU opportunities will be discussed, as well as incorporating pre and post self-assessment tools as a mechanism for states to collect learner outcome data. In addition, highlights on a new module for Program Managers of Newborn Hearing Screening programs will be presented.

Randi Winston-Gerson

Randi consults on a variety of EHDI related projects and serves as adjunct assistant professor at A.T. Still University. Prior to that she worked as a consulting audiologist for The EAR Foundation of Arizona and Arizona's EHDI Program since 1998. Her role included the implementation of newborn hearing and early childhood screening programs with an emphasis on program quality, systems development and best practices. During that time she served on NCHAM’s Technical Assistance Network, assisting states in Region X. Randi maintains her role as lead audiologist on the Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum (NHSTC) project and has co-authored several research articles involving newborn and early childhood screening.
Randi holds doctorate of audiology, is state licensed in Arizona and a member of AAA, ASHA and the ArSHA. She also serves as director of the Arizona Special Olympics Healthy Hearing Program.

Karen Ditty

Dr. Ditty is a pediatric audiologist with extensive experience and expertise in Early Hearing
Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs. Her career spans over 35 years and includes initiating newborn hearing screening and hearing aid legislation while implementing EHDI activities in Louisiana and Texas. Dr. Ditty has been associated with the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) for more than 20 years. She has been the coordinator of the NCHAM national pediatric audiology diagnostic workshops and served as a member of the Technical Assistance Network for the states of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana over the last decade. Dr. Ditty works on a variety of projects related to early childhood screening and pediatric audiology, such as the Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum and issues related to program quality, financing, and sustainability. Dr. Ditty has authored and contributed to publications related to EHDI, as well as presented extensively at local, national, and international forums on numerous topics related to EHDI.
