Using the EARS Inc. Framework of S.T.O.R.E. to Design Audiology Programs in the Developing World

To address the overwhelming demand for audiology services in low and middle income countries (LMIC), an increasing number of charitable and non-government organisations (NGOs), and government departments are seeking to provide ear health and hearing rehabilitation programs. EARS Incorporated, an Australian Christian audiology aid organisation, has supported and resourced audiology programs in LMICs since 1998 and has developed, through observation and experience, the S.T.O.R.E. framework. The importance of Services, Training, Outreach, Resources and Evaluation (S.T.O.R.E.) will be highlighted through examples from an EARS Inc. supported audiology program in Lilongwe Malawi, as will recommendations on how to work towards providing effective and sustainable audiology programs despite many challenges.

  • Use this framework when establishing and monitoring a sustainable audiology program in a LMIC
  • Understand how the components of STORE interact to deliver a robust, efficient and effective program
  • Consider how this model has been used in the EARS Inc project in Malawi at the African Bible College in Lilongwe
