Click! Coaching and Empowering Parents using Technology
Early Interventionists working with parents focus on the use of coaching techniques to empower parents as they gain knowledge and become advocates for their children. Early Interventionists have access to resources, strategies and information that they share with parents during family sessions. A parent’s role during a family session is that of an active participant seeking information, learning and practicing strategies, and asking questions. Early Interventionists can further the reach of their coaching practice beyond the living room setting by offering continued collaboration, demonstration, practice, reflection and feedback for the parents using technology. Technology affords us the ability to present parents with quick access to information, the ability to review and reflect, concrete visual representations and demonstrations individualizing to meet the specific needs of their child and the strategies they are learning as parents to meet their child’s needs. One example of how an Early Interventionist may use technology to coach and empower parents could include the use of pictures and/or videos to demonstrate a specific targeted strategy. This allows the family to practice the targeted strategy throughout the week while reviewing the video demonstration that is readily available to both themselves and caregivers and presented in a format that is conducive to their learning style and needs as the parent. In return, a parent can use technology to express their concerns, question or share celebratory milestones demonstrating achieved outcomes in between sessions. This presentation will include demonstrations featuring strategies that focus on the inclusion of technology to enhance coaching practice. Facilitated breakout discussions with peers to generate techniques for incorporating technology into practice with families currently on one’s caseload.
