It's Better When We're Together: Medical, Family & Educational Collaboration for Improved EHDI Outcomes

The University of North Carolina is the medical home for many of the children born deaf or hard of hearing in our state. The Children's Cochlear Implant Team at UNC follows over 1000 children and performs approximately 150 implants per year. We also have a large pediatric audiology program that identifies hearing loss and fits children with hearing aids. As a state, North Carolina has a long-standing spirit of collaboration when it comes to serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing. This presentation will share the various ways that UNC, as a medical home, collaborates with other state and private agencies including our state EHDI program to support families and improve outcomes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Data presented will include how we use our Co-treat model to improve communication among multiple agencies, current initiatives and projects that include one or more additional state stakeholders and opportunities for growth in collaboration. Using the model of SWOT (Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats) participants will be able to brainstorm applicable next steps within their own state EHDI system.

  • Participants will be able to research and identify key stakeholders in their state needed for collaboration for best EHDI outcomes
  • Participants will be able to discuss how one state uses the model of collaboration for improved outcomes
  • Participants will be able to brainstorm next steps based on their role as a stakeholder to improve collaboration within their own EHDI system using a SWOT model
