MINING MATTERS: PREDATION PRESSURE AND WATER QUALITY IN A YOUNG SAND MINE LAKE

Sand mining activity is on the rise globally and has led to the formation of many sand pit lakes resulting from sand extraction below the water table. Although these unique, young aquatic systems are becoming more prevalent due to the demand for sand, little research has addressed their ecology and function. This project is being undertaken to expand understanding of water quality and macroinvertebrate assemblage structure in a sand mine lake located in the dune region of west Michigan. An exclusion cage experiment is also in progress to evaluate predator-prey interactions in the early successional stage of such lakes. A comparison of the sand mine lake with a natural dune lake of comparable size, located ~20 km north, will provide insight into the long-term impacts of mining activity, and how mine lakes differ from naturally formed lakes. The project will establish a critical baseline for sand mine lakes, which will facilitate their future reclamation and restoration as valuable community resources. Preliminary results of in-progress water quality and macroinvertebrate surveys and exclusion cage experiments will be presented.
