Standardized Site Visits: Collaborating with Hospitals, Audiologists and/or Family Support

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs have utilized a variety of approaches to work with hospital Newborn Hearing Screening (NBHS) programs and pediatric audiology practices over the years. Face-to-face, on-site visits have been reported as most effective, but not always feasible. Barriers to face-to-face site visits vary from cost and time to restrictions due to the recent pandemic. Site visits provide a framework for creating a collaborative ongoing partnership between EHDI programs and hospitals and audiologists to work together toward the common goal of providing the highest standard of care in newborn hearing screening and follow-up. Due to the importance of routine site visits and in light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, fiscal and/ or travel restrictions, the Virtual Hospital Site Visit (VSV) Project was created. During this session, several states will report on their experiences with both face-to-face and virtual site visits with hospital newborn hearing screening programs and/or pediatric audiology practices. Resources such as email templates, compliance guides, rubrics, data reports, adapted virtual site visit curricula, and site visit reports will be provided for all attendees. Presentation will be followed by facilitated discussion in small groups to allow for additional sharing.
