The Experiences of Transgender Mormons*

Transgender individuals are a vulnerable population; they are at an increased risk of suicide, are more likely to experience stressors related to discrimination and family rejection, and are at a high risk of experiencing mental health concerns such as depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideation and behaviors. Most studies involving LGBTQ+ experiences in the LDS Church focus on sexual minorities rather than gender minorities, and studies tend to focus more broadly on religion or Christianity. The gap in the literature on this topic means that trans Mormons’ families, LDS Church leaders, and other members of the LDS community have little information available and may not know how to help or be supportive towards trans folks. In this research we examine the experiences of both current and former transgender members of the LDS Church to more fully understand the range of outcomes and experiences of those that have been impacted by LDS doctrine and culture. The aim of the study is to understand which factors lead to increased well-being for those who have stayed in the LDS Church and for those who have left. Our sample included 25 transgender individuals who identify as currently or formerly belonging to the LDS Church. Data was collected through demographic questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis and coding has begun, but the results are preliminary. A main takeaway from the data thus far is a sense that trans Mormon folks are likely to experience internal conflict about their religious and gender identities, with many feeling like the only way to manage this conflict is by sacrificing or giving up important elements of one identity or both. There also appears to be an overall sense of shame and a need to suppress or ignore feelings of gender dysphoria in order to maintain relationships and church privileges.
