How Do Wild Horses and Burros Affect The One Health Initiative in the West
While horses and burros are not significant concerns in terms of zoonotic diseases in the west, their impacts on the overall health and wellbeing of other species cannot be ignored. This discussion will draw attention to changes to the west's most sensitive landscapes and the changes that are and can occur with unmanaged populations of wild horses and burros.
Disease is directly tied to stress and immune function and the connection between healthy landscapes, healthy animals and a healthy public will be touched on.

Dr. J.J. Goicoechea is the Nevada State Veterinarian for the Nevada Department of Agriculture. Dr. Goicoechea brings 17 years of private practice experience to the position of State Veterinarian and has worked with state and federal agencies on wild horse and burro issues in both private practice and state service. In addition to being a veterinarian, Dr. Goicoechea is a fourth generation rancher on the family ranch in White Pine County Nevada.
J.J., his wife Sally and their two daughters make their home in Eureka, Nevada.
