Language acquisition and deprivation in children who are deaf/hard of hearing; a proposal to reduce the trauma experienced by these children and their parents
Our current system of early intervention primarily begins in a medical setting, when parents, the great perecentage of whom are hearing, are given the often surprising and unwelcome news of their child needing to be 'referred' due to the newborn hearing screening results. This presentation will review the impact of our current system with what happens next, and suggests an approach that focuses on incorporating the gifts/strengths of the Deaf Community to ensure that an infant's cognitive and linguistic development can begin immediately, as opposed to waiting until the hearing technology is in place.
- Review/critique of current system of early intervention for children who are deaf/hard of hearing and families
- Review of linguistic and cognitive development among children who are deaf/hard of hearing
- Consider an alternate approach/change to our current system, one that ensures linguistic/cognitive access and simulation from day one
