The Genomes of Rock and Willow Ptarmigans
We have obtained whole genome sequences for rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) and willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus), using Illumina next generation sequencing technology. We will present complete genomes, using long read sequencing to complete the genomic drafts of these species, which will enable thorough genome characterization and annotation of genes. Using the draft genomes, we have already characterized the mitochondrial genomes of these two ptarmigan species. Further, we have obtained transcriptomes from eight tissues from rock ptarmigan. At last we will present full characterization of the cathelicidin gene family, and expression.
The genomic data will be applied in a population genetics study using material obtained from a recent longitudinal rock ptarmigan monitoring project in North-east Iceland, spanning the years 2006-2017, where the relationships among health, body condition and related parameters with respect to population cycling has was studied in detail. The rock ptarmigan in Iceland undergoes regular changes in number. Since 2003 there have been three peaks in ptarmigan numbers in North-east Iceland. The first peak was in 2005, the second in 2010 and the third in 2015. Can ecological genomics be used as a tool to detect selection signatures and footprints of cycling and local adaption of the rock ptarmigan in Iceland?
Understanding the functional role of genetic variation in natural populations is crucial to investigate evolutionary processes and conservation issues, which are valuable for curbing the accelerating worldwide loss of biodiversity.
