The Utah Water Reuse Study: Initial Findings, Implications, and the Landscape of Wastewater Reuse Application
Water reuse has been acknowledged as a way to manage increasing demand for water and diminishing water supplies. In Utah, the second driest state in the US, some municipalities are moving forward with reuse programs of varied size and application. The Utah Water Reuse Study examines the engagement of municipalities, water conservancy districts, and industries engaged in the use of recycled water across the state, and seeks to understand the attitudes that water providers hold regarding reuse. This research captures the variation in engagement and pursuit of water reuse programs, and uses qualitative interviews with key stakeholders across the state to understand the purposes, drivers, and barriers to engagement in water reuse. This presentation will present information to be included in the 2020 State of Utah Water Reuse report on water reuse activity across the state, as well as preliminary findings from interviews that capture the nuanced issues that influence a water provider’s decision to pursue reuse, including infrastructure, economics, water rights, and styles of governance.
