Power Density Study for High Power Wireless Charging Couplers and Systems
High power wireless charging (200 kW) can play a crucial role in both stationary and dynamic charging scenarios. Paralleling two or more medium power WPT systems by means of modular power electronics and coils is one of the approaches to realize a high power WPT architecture. The paralleling approach has a reduced system level power density and a large foot print for coils. The dimension of the WPT couplers is dependent on the power transfer height, the current density of the coil and the operating frequency. The current and voltage stresses on the resonant network is dependent on the dimensions of the coil and tuning network selected. This study examines the effect of current density in the coils, operating frequency, and tuning architecture on the power density of the coils and the stresses on the resonant network. The study is done by the aid of FEA and circuit simulations.
