A Tool for Clarifying Service for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Families in Early Intervention
In areas with limited services and resources, Early Intervention teams often have little experience providing service to families and their deaf or hard of hearing child. Washington State has guidelines for best practice for families enrolled in early intervention whose children are deaf or hard of hearing. This presentation will discuss those recommendations, and the challenges of meeting them. We will present a draft tool for helping teams start conversations about team strengths, family strengths and resource gaps. We will suggest ways to fill those gaps and build competence and confidence in local teams.
- 1. Identify areas of information in which providers need competence in order to provide best service to families whose children have hearing loss. 2. Identify ways to use the presented tool to promote competence, confidence and team building. 3. State action steps for your team, state or personal practice in filling resource gaps.
