Supporting families when they go off the beaten path

Like all communities, the deaf/hard of hearing community is dynamic and diverse. When a family has newly identified deaf/hard of hearing infant or child, they are often faced with a huge amount of information and must make decisions. Processing the information and making immediate decisions is oftentimes overwhelming, yet it is important that the family makes those decisions that makes the most sense for them. It is critical to support families in making the right choices for their family at that moment, always understanding that people and families are dynamic and the first choices are not always the only choice or the final place. In fact, they oftentimes are not. Sometimes families choose a mode of communication, a piece of technology, or an educational setting that you have no resources for or experience with. We will discuss what professionals and family organizations can do to support one another when families make choices that take them off the beaten path. How to support dynamic families How to strengthen your system when it doen’t already have services How to help families connect to resources

  • How to create a strong support system for a dynamic family
  • The importance of family school community partnership
  • Why it is important to shift the focus toward strengths and gifts.
