Touched By Trauma: Assisting Children and Youth in Identifying and Processing Trauma Experiences
Approximately 1 in 7 experience childhood domestic violence. Childhood domestic violence can negatively impact an individual’s physical health, mental health, behavior, and relationships over an individual’s lifetime if left unaddressed. Most professionals can agree that children who experience trauma in the home are in need of age- and developmentally-appropriate therapeutic services, but many are uncertain what resources are available or where to turn for help. Working with youth poses several challenges that deter clinicians from working with that population.
Through our collective experiences, we have found several methods that have been successful with our youth clients through family, individual, and group therapeutic services. When working with youth, we utilize several assessments and questionnaires to guide treatment services along with age-appropriate storybooks and online interactive tools to assist children in identifying trauma experiences, including their thoughts and feelings surrounding their experiences.
Attendees will be introduced to:
1.Strategies to assist children in identifying what trauma is and what it looks like.
2.How to address gender and cultural differences in trauma experiences.
3.How to incorporate the topic of safety within treatment services with youth.
4.How to encourage client empowerment through personal safety and self-care strategies that are age- and developmentally-appropriate.
5.Scenarios and small group practice.

- Learn about how to address gender and cultural differences in trauma experiences.
- Learn about how to incorporate the topic of safety within treatment services with youth.
