Building Skills and Knowledge for Language and Literacy: A Partnership Defined

The Hands & Voices Family Leadership in Language and Learning (FL3) Program, along with their Partner the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, have joined together to ensure that families have the opportunity to optimize their children’s outcomes in language, literacy, and social development through increase of knowledge and understanding in these areas. In its partnership with the Laurent Clerc/Gallaudet University, H&V will disseminate resources and expertise of the Center and their efforts in providing language and literacy resources. This session will provide an outline of the Hands & Voices use of a variety of tools and approaches to disseminate information about Language and Literacy. Information will also be shared from what the FL3 learned from the National Needs Assessment regarding the needs of families increase in knowledge for language and literacy development. Additionally, H&V will share how the values and mission of H&V in providing support to families across the language and modality spectrum is being addressed in this area.

  • Build self-awareness that leads to a greater ability to ensure families have access to information and increased knowledge in the areas of language and literacy
  • Utilize the resources that will be available for families.
  • Be able to discuss resources that ensure parents with newly identified babies will become well-informed on their children’s language acquisition opportunities.

Janet DesGeorges lives in Boulder, Colorado and is Executive Director of Hands & Voices Headquarters. Janet has presented to groups worldwide about the experiences of families as they journey through life with a child with deafness or hearing loss. Ms. DesGeorges received a program certificate from the MCH Public Health Leadership Institute in 2011 at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. As an EHDI Systems advocate, Janet believes in the principles and guiding philosophies of Hands & Voices towards a parent-driven, professionally-collaborative approach when supporting families in the early years. Her areas of interest include Leadership Development for parents who participate in systemic improvement; Deaf Education Reform and Improvement; Children’s Safety and Success(preventing child abuse and neglect); Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Systems; and Parent/Professional partnerships in Quality Improvement processes.

Melissa Herzig (), Visual Language and Visual Learning, NSF Funded Science of Learning Center, melissa.herzig@gallaudet.edu;
Dr. Melissa Herzig is the Director of the Translation in the Science of Learning Center of the Visual Language and Visual Learning and the Co-Founder and Assistant Director for the Ph.D. in Educational Neuroscience program at Gallaudet University. She is responsible for leading assessments and evaluations of the Center’s resources—both for VL2 and for her work with schools. She has a BA in Biology from Gallaudet University. She received a MA and her Doctoral Degree in Teaching and Learning at University of California, San Diego. She worked at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla California, Language and Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at San Diego State University, and at Center for Research in Language at UCSD. She was a teacher at a mainstreamed high school for 8 years, and a supervisor for student teachers and interns at UCSD and National University. She has published numerous articles about language learning, bilingualism, and motivation for reading.

Terri Patterson (), Hands & Voices, terri@handsandvoices.org;
Terri Patterson is the Director of Chapter Support for Hands & Voices, Coordinator of the H&V Leadership-to-Leadership (L2L) Program, and a member of the core management team for Hands & Voices Family Leadership in Language and Learning (FL3) Center. Her passion stems from her family, specifically her son who was born profoundly deaf in 1999. Through her personal experiences raising, supporting and advocating for her son, as well as navigating the systems that support children who are D/HH, she provides perspective, herself, as a hard of hearing adult. Her leadership skills continue to grow as she trains and provides technical assistance to over 50 Hands & Voices Chapters and efforts across North America through one-on-one training, leadership development, state and national conference presentations and national organizational engagement with NAD, NCDB, HRSA.
