Cued Speech 101: What Is It and Why Should You Know About It?
Per the National Cued Speech Association, “Cued Speech is a visual mode of communication in which mouth movements of speech combine with ‘cues’ to make the sounds (phonemes) of traditional spoken languages look different. Cueing allows users who are deaf, hard of hearing or who have language / communication disorders to access the basic, fundamental properties of spoken languages through the use of vision.” Cued Speech can be used in both the home and therapy settings to provide visual access to the sounds of spoken language. It can also be used in conjunction with hearing technology to provide clarification support of the sounds heard. In addition to learning about Cued Speech, we will also present a “taste of Cued Speech” and participants will learn the basic handshapes and locations and cue some simple words.
- Participants will be able to use the information to explain and demonstrate what Cued Speech looks like and how it works.
- Participants will be able to state how Cued Speech can support language development.
- Participants will be able to share how they can use Cued Speech in the home and in therapy settings.
