A Systematic Review of Colorado Newborn Hearing Screening Practices via the Virtual Site Visit Project
Colorado Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (COEHDI) adopted NCHAM’s Virtual Site Visit Curriculum to systematically review hospital-based newborn hearing screening programs throughout the state. Historically, Colorado’s EHDI programs conducted in-person site visits with birthing facilities to monitor their newborn hearing screening programs; however, many barriers now exist with in-person visits including cost, time, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. To overcome these barriers, a shift to a virtual format was necessary to maintain a systematic review of newborn hearing screening programs. Another goal of this project is to analyze the data gathered through virtual site visits to address three main questions about statewide screening practices: (1) Is there consistency in knowledge and training of best practices in newborn hearing screening across Colorado hospitals? (2) Is there consistency in screening practices and communication about congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) across newborn hearing screening programs? and (3) If inconsistencies exist, how can the COEHDI program personnel support hospitals to enhance their newborn hearing screening programs? Based on these findings, COEHDI personnel will systematically identify areas for enhancement for each birthing hospital.

- Participants will be able to explain consistencies and inconsistencies in screening practices for congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) in one state.

Hannah is a licensed audiologist and combined Ph.D. candidate in Speech, Langauge, & Hearing Science; Behavioral Neuroscience; and Cognitive Science at the University of Colorado-Boulder (CU-Boulder). She is the laboratory of the Brain & Behavior Laboratory under principal investigation of Dr. Anu Sharma at CU-Boulder. With a broad interest in hearing loss-related brain changes across the age spectrum, she hopes to combine her clinical and research skills in the changing landscape of audiology and neuroscience. Her special interests include brain changes in age-related hearing loss, cross-modal cortical plasticity, and cochlear implants.

Arlene Stredler-Brown, PhD, CCC-SLP is the Director of the Colorado Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program. In addition, she provides consultation and technical assistance to programs working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing in the United States and internationally. Her recent research focuses on telehealth; the use of coaching strategies in the delivery of family-centered early intervention; and promoting system change. Common themes guiding her work are: inclusiveness, collaboration, and a commitment to infants and toddlers who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families.

Kristen Sommerfeldt is a faculty member at the University of Colorado- Boulder, a practicing audiologist at UCHealth Hearing and Balance Clinic, and the president-elect of the Colorado Academy of Audiology.

Jami Fries lives in Mead, CO with her husband, Eric, and two boys, Liam and Nathan. Nathan is profoundly deaf due to congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV), has Type 1 Diabetes, and struggles with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Jami is the Executive Director of Colorado Hands & Voices, the Guide By Your Side Coordinator and is the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Plus and congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) Parent Guide. She is an advocate for cCMV awareness and education. Jami has presented at multiple National Conferences and local events regarding hearing loss and congenital CMV.
