THE ANTONIA BRANCIA MAXON AWARD FOR EHDI EXCELLENCE
Bradley H. Bakken
We respectfully nominate Bradley Hartman Bakken, Ph.D. for the 2022 Antonia Brancia Maxon Award. His body of professional work, as well as his contributions and commitment to parent engagement and partnerships, would honor the memory of Dr. Maxon and her contributions to the EHDI community.
Our nomination for Dr. Bakken comes from experiencing his partnerships with family leaders, with Hands & Voices Headquarters/Chapters, and the Family Leadership in Language and Learning Center (FL3). When the HRSA funded FL3 Center was first awarded to Hands & Voices, Bradley was an early adopter and supporter of the work to ensure the meaningful participation of families in EHDI.
The WY EHDI Program works to ensure that infants and toddlers with hearing loss are identified as early as possible. Under the leadership of Dr. Bakken and his EHDI Co-Director Sarah Fitzgerald, help for children/families is a priority to get the timely and appropriate intervention they need. Dr. Bakken's work focuses on late onset hearing loss supporting families who are sometimes "left behind" when they are not part of the 1-3-6 model of EHDI.
He has attended and modeled EHDI Coordinator commitment at the H&V Leadership Conference, participates on the FL3 Advisory Board, and has demonstrated inclusivity in partnering with parents at every level. He is a current Executive Board member and Past President for the Directors of Speech and Hearing Programs in State Health and Welfare Agencies (DSHPSHWA). He has facilitated a Grant Writing Workshop and other presentations at Annual National EHDI meetings.
Wyoming Hands & Voices parent leaders Kim Reimann and Wendy Hewitt share the following:
Working with Bradley Hartman-Bakken over his past ten years with the WY EHDI Program has been a pleasure and a joy. His passion towards building relationships, supporting Wyoming families, and growing the WY EHDI Program has become very evident in the past three years since Bradley's promotion as the Co-Coordinator for the WY EHDI Program. Bradley is a loyal and driven individual who has worked tirelessly to aid in continual education to child development centers throughout the state. His work has helped to create a strong network of different supports for children with hearing loss and their families. This is evident through the support that Bradley provides to family-based organizations such as WY Families for Hands & Voices. A strong, cohesive bond has been fostered between different stakeholders due to his efforts. It is a privilege to be able to work with someone who values your work, supports your goals, and teams up with you to successfully serve Wyoming families!
Bradley is very passionate and knowledgeable about his work at EHDI and very deserving of the Antonia Brancia Maxon Award for EHDI Excellence! Bradley's eagerness to learn, to be an open book, to gather information, his respect for the parent perspective and role of DHH adults in EHDI systems, his authentic desire to strive for excellence...These are the reasons his nomination for the Maxon Award reflects the spirit in which the award is given.
