 5. Of newborns screened for hearing loss during October - December, 2003, estimate the percentage who DID NOT PASS prior to hospital discharge.

  • 4.77% - 48 states
  • 3.38% - Excluding outliers (12 states screening < 95% [Range: 5.1% - 30%])

 6. Do hospitals in your state systematically collect data for newborns about the presence of HEARING LOSS RISK INDICATORS (such as the JCIH indicators)?

  • 14 -- All or most hospitals
  • 17 -- Some hospitals
  • 20 -- No

a. Estimate the percentage of newborns for whom risk indicator data were collected during the last quarter of 2003. (No response: 5 states)

  • 44.62% (26 states)

b. Do hospitals submit risk indicator data to the state EHDI program?

  • 2 -- Yes, but only aggregate data
  • 23 -- Yes, for individual babies
  • 4 -- No

c. For babies who had risk indicators, estimate the percentage for which each of the following were done (percentages may sum to more than 100%).

  • 78.05% The baby's physician was notified of the need for monitoring. (19 states responding)
  • 86.11% The baby's parents were notified of the need for monitoring. (18 states responding)
