Title: 'Laying the Foundation for Listening' Track: 4 - Early Intervention Keyword(s): Language and Auditory Skill Development Learning Objectives: identify and describe components of treatment for infants awaiting implantation describe therapy strategies that could be utilized prior to CI activation and after CI activation and give examples of appropriate treatment objectives during the first two years following CI activation develop and implement fun lesson plans for children learning to listen with a CI Abstract: This presentation will outline treatment components for typical children awaiting cochlear implantation and following activation who were implanted at or prior to 12 months of age. Emphasis will be placed on laying the foundation for listening for the first and second years following cochlear implant activation. An overview of long term therapy goals, short term objectives,treatment strategies, and activities used within treatment sessions for infants and toddlers will be shared. Lesson plan ideas will demonstrate fun ways to build auditory skills for beginning listeners. The early lesson plans with objectives will be expanded to include demonstration of activities which target appropriate goals for a child approaching three years of age. Videotaped examples of treatment sessions with many developing listeners will be presented. Outcomes of successful intervention for young children with cochlear implants will be discussed. Velvet Buehler - Primary Presenter,Author,POC University of Tennessee Health Science Center      Credentials: M.A. CCC-SLP/A Clinical Professor Audiologist and Speech Pathologist       Velvet Buehler is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She holds dual certification in Audiology and Speech Pathology. Mrs. Buehler has provided aural-habilitation services to children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families for 28 years. She supervises practicum for graduate students in Audiology and Speech Pathology in the areas of aural-habilitation, parent counseling and education, literacy, pediatric audiology and auditory processing disorder. Mrs. Buehler serves on two cochlear implant teams providing pre/post cochlear implant evaluations and treatment. She has presented at numerous regional and national conferences Mrs. Buehler is a certified trainer for the National Educators of Children with Cochlear Implants. She is a certified NOMS clinician.
