An SLP’s Personal Discovery as a Parent of a Deaf Child – What Else Should be Added with Speech?
A licensed Speech Language Pathologist working in an educational setting and her grown deaf daughter, now an educational specialist and a mother, share their personal journey and discuss current applying research findings related to optimal linguistic and cognitive development for deaf children. Learn how a new mother of a deaf child first facilitated her daughter’s speech development. Her daughter reaped benefits of early language milestones, accelerated growth in vocabulary and grammatical development. She also developed an early love for reading with better phonological awareness, and expansion in the auditory cortex and cognitive control processes. We will discuss how much does an additive communication and language approach contributes to improved academic performance.
This presentation will walk the audience through their journey as both a parent and child, and speech-language pathologist and a teacher. They will share the multiple benefits of the approach they used, in linguistic, phonological, cognitive, and academic areas of growth. You’ll enjoy the ability to see applied research through multiple lenses: a parent, a SLP, a deaf adult, and a teacher!

Lynn Gold received her M.A. in Communicative Disorders and Audiology from California State University Los Angeles, following work as an SLP in Arlington, VA. She served several years in Clovis, NM schools. In Albuquerque, NM she worked as SLP at the Hearing and Speech Center and in a rehab private, during which time her daughter was born. Not long after Erika was deafened at seven months of age, Gold and family relocated to LA to participate as a family in the John Tracy Clinic preschool and parent education program. She has been an active member of her daughter's schools' parent groups. From 1970 to 1999, Ms. Gold operated her own private practice, first in NM, then in Irvine and Tustin, CA. She taught in the Communication Disorders Departments of CSUN and CSULB. Since 2000 she has worked with elementary school students and families in Anaheim, CA.

Erika Thompson

Erika Thompson, M.A. serves as a Community Resource Specialist at the California School for the Deaf in Riverside. She coordinates publications as writer and editor, and chairs the school self-study and strategic planning for school accreditation. For the California Deaf Education Resource Center (CDERC), Ms. Thompson develops and shares resources with the school and community across Southern California to improve language access and academic performance for all deaf and hard-of-hearing children. She previously worked as a curriculum specialist and as an English teacher.
Since before Mrs. Thompson became profoundly deaf at seven months old, her mother Lynn Gold has been a SLP. Thompson grew up with speech and sign language since two years old. Ms. Gold added sign language to help Thompson accelerate her cognitive and language acquisition, including speech. Ms. Gold, SLP, works for Anaheim Unified School District, Orange County.
