Chasing the 1, 3, 6: Closing the Gap in Pediatric Medical Resident Education

Pediatricians are on the front line for their expertise in all areas of a child's development, but how much do they know about hearing loss in infants and young children? For the past 14 years, CEID has been providing a half day intensive seminar to pediatric medical residents in the San Francisco Bay area to fill in the gaps in their knowledge. In addition, we have created the Pediatric Resource Guide to Infant and Childhood Hearing Loss, now in it's third edition, to use as a training manual and reference book for pediatricians. The goal of the program is to make sure pediatricians are overseeing that children are not lost to follow up, that they are ensuring parents feel properly supported, and that medical residents have an understanding of how a newborn goes from newborn hearing screening to being connected to all the services that they need to flourish.

  • Participants will be able identify the gaps in pediatric training programs in regards to hearing in infants and young children and knowing what considerations to take in setting up their own partnerships and training.
  • Participants will describe the Pediatric Resident Training Program and the guidebook developed as a resource to support pediatricians with young patients with a confirmed or suspected hearing loss to make sure they meet the recommended 1,3,6 timelines.
  • Participants will be able to name some of the topics that are included in the Pediatric Resident Training.

Presenters/Authors

Helisa Katz (Primary Presenter), The Center for Early Intervention on Deafness, helisa@ceid.org;
Helisa Katz has been working at CEID for 14 years as a Teacher of the Deaf, and an Early Intervention Specialist/ Home Visitor. Besides Home Visits, she teaches the Parent-Child Sign Language Play Group, coordinates and runs parent education and support programs and provides monthly trainings to Pediatric Medical Residents. Ms. Katz received her B.A. from Indiana University in Early Intervention for Deaf Children, her Master’s Degree from Gallaudet University in Family Centered Early Education, her Teaching Credential from San Jose State University in Deaf Education, and a certificate from Ohlone College in Sign Language Interpretation. Ms. Katz also holds certification from the National Association of the Deaf and Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf in Sign Language Interpreting. When Ms. Katz is not working at CEID she is spending time with her 5 year old.
