A Brain-Based Clinical Measure for Assisting in Early Intervention for Children with Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder

Early intervention for children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) can be challenging due to the inter- and intra-patient variability. We will describe research from our laboratory, which shows that the P1 cortical auditory evoked response biomarker is an index of cortical maturation and severity of cortical dys-synchrony in children with ANSD. Further, using a case study approach, we will demonstrate that the P1 response is a reliable predictor of behavioral outcome and a useful guide in monitoring and guiding clinical decisions in children with ANSD. Use of the P1 biomarker in pediatric audiology may potentially help clinicians with decision-making regarding audiological intervention with amplification and/or electrical stimulation in complex pediatric ANSD cases. Work supported by the National Institutes of Health

  • describe biomarkers of central auditory maturation in children with hearing loss and ANSD.
  • describe the challenges to early intervention in children with ANSD.
  • describe the use of the P1 biomarker in guiding early intervention in children with ANSD.
