Regional Analysis of 1-3-6 Goals in North Carolina

This student-led project is a collaboration of the North Carolina EHDI and LEND programs. The project is undertaking a detailed analysis of 1-3-6 goals and outcomes across twelve EHDI regions within the state. The geographic boundaries were redrawn earlier this year along with changes in the roles and responsibilities of EHDI staff within each region. Specifically, the number of regions was increased from six to twelve and the new management plan now requires designated EHDI staff members to assume responsibility for monitoring all 1-3-6 activities within their region. Six LEND-funded students from the graduate program in audiology (AuD) at UNC Chapel Hill have each been assigned to two contiguous EHDI regions. Faculty mentoring is being provided by the NC EHDI Program Coordinator, Dr. Marcia Fort, and the NC-LEND Director, Dr. Jackson Roush. Each regional analysis includes quantitative metrics combined with a qualitative analysis aimed at studying factors that might account for regional variability in 1-3-6 outcomes. In October, each of the LEND audiology trainees met with the EHDI staff member from their assigned region at a statewide EHDI Stakeholder conference in Chapel Hill. The students are now following up with their regional representatives and with a data management specialist in the Division of Public Health. Beyond the 1-3-6 outcomes we are examining issues related to home births, access to pediatric audiology centers, outsourcing of newborn hearing screening, challenges associated with data entry, and special needs of non-English speaking families. The proposed poster, in addition to sharing the findings outlined above, will describe the process used to conduct the regional analysis and how it could be replicated in other states.

Heather Mazzola is a third year Audiology student at the University of North Carolina. She is a trainee on the LEND grant. She has worked with Special Olympics Healthy Hearing for many years and plans to become a clinical director for the program upon graduation. Her interests include audiology across the lifespan including those with developmental and intellectual disability.

Marcia Fort (Co-Presenter), Division of Public Health, marcia.fort@dhhs.nc.gov;
Dr. Fort is the Program Development and Evaluation Manager for the North Carolina EHDI Program. She has worked with the NC EHDI program for 9 years. She has 22 years experience as a pediatric audiologist in hospital, private practice, ENT, and public school settings.
