For the Love of Books!

The successful CHOICES for Parents READ Program now expands to 0 – 3! Having distributed over 25,000 books throughout Illinois to encourage early literacy for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, we have received a generous grant from Oberkotter Foundation to create reading kits and videos to expand this program to the 0 – 3 population with the goal of providing parents with successful strategies to create language rich, interactive memories with their infants/toddlers. We will share two reading kits and four strategies outlined in the first video, while teach attendees the impact of early language development on achieving school-readiness and social/emotional well-being. CHOICES for Parents is a statewide coalition of parents and professionals who provide immediate access to support, information, advocacy and resources to parents whose children are deaf, hard of hearing or have a hearing loss. Chicago Hearing Society is a founding member and fiscal agent of the CHOICES for Parents coalition, whose membership has now reached 29.

  • Attendees will learn how to adapt their own books for "reading kit" use when working with families.
  • Attendees will be able to apply strategies learned at completion of session.
  • Attendees will be able to adapt and/or use evaluation tools presented when returning home to programs.

Presenters/Authors

Karen Aguilar (Primary Presenter), Chicago Hearing Society, KAguilar@anixter.org;
Ms. Aguilar is the Director of the Chicago Hearing Society, a division of Anixter Center, that provides social services and advocacy, youth programing and mentoring, a hearing health clinic and interpreter referral service throughout Illinois. CHS houses the CHOICES for Parents Coalition and Guide By Your Side program in Illinois. Ms. Aguilar's past work includes creating a center based early intervention program for families and providing developmental therapy, service coordination and family support. Ms. Aguilar has a Masters of Jurisprudence in Health Law from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and has trained the legal community on the rights of persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, and educated the Deaf Community about their rights under state and federal laws. Ms. Aguilar has been signing since childhood and is a nationally-certified state-licensed sign language interpreter.

Karla Giese (Co-Presenter), AGBMS-AEHI, karla.giese@agbms.org;
Karla is a deaf adult, well experienced in all modes of communication: written, spoken, signing, and cueing. Karla is an active advocate for deaf education and access to literacy for all deaf children. Currently, Karla oversees the Student Support Services Program at Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School near Chicago, a model program that uses Cued Speech and spoken language to educate deaf and hearing children together. Karla is also the Coordinator of CHOICES for Parents, a statewide referral/resource program for families of children with hearing loss. Karla has worked with deaf and hard of hearing children of all ages, from birth to age 21, across all educational settings, utilizing all modes of communication. As a student of deaf education programs, a teacher in deaf education programs, and an administrator of deaf education programs, Karla has come full circle and enjoys sharing her experiences with others.
