Keeping 'Family' in the individual Family Services Plan for Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children

Families are a key component and key differentiation of the IFSP relative to the IEP, but are there really any substantial 'family' outcomes in your IFSPs? How do we identify services and outcomes that families need that go beyond coaching them on how to implement demonstrated therapies in the home? How do we ensure that the families we serve are ready and equipped for when their child moves on to Part B services? This presentation, given by a parent, will review some guiding documents, identify some categories for you to consider when writing family outcomes, and give you practical tools to utilize as well as examples of outcomes that will help you to start thinking about really getting the value out of the 'F' in IFSP. Service coordinators and early intervention providers will leave feeling empowered to engage more with parents to evaluate what they really need, and to write outcomes to achieve those needs. Participants will feel more confident as to how they can truly take advantage of this short Part C window to incorporate family outcomes into the IFSP thus creating an improved IFSP and better fulfilling their role with families.

  • Participants will be able to demonstrate knowledge of two or three guiding documents for the implementation of expanded 'family' outcomes in the IFSP.
  • Participants will be able to identify and explain four categories for 'family' outcomes in the IFSP.
  • Participants will be able to develop and write outcomes and identify/recommend strategies for families to pursue to achieve those outcomes for each proposed category of 'family' outcomes in the IFSP.
