It May Be a Silent Problem, but the Solution is Anything But! “Let’s Make It Loud and Clear”

A knowledge gap regarding hearing screening and its role in EHDI has been observed among neonatal nursing personnel at multiple hospitals. Although they understand that hearing screening must be completed prior to discharge as a standard nursery procedure, they often do not grasp its importance and urgency along with its impact on the potential outcome for babies in their care. Previous studies and surveys describing physician and midwife awareness of hearing screening and the EHDI process have been reported, but none to date have specifically evaluated awareness and attitudes of neonatal nurses who are the front line for both hearing screening and screening follow-up compliance at the hospital level. Active participation of neonatal nursing staff as stakeholders, coupled with increased knowledge regarding EHDI systems and their benefits for families of infants born with congenital hearing impairment, offer a valuable opportunity to improve follow-up compliance and support EHDI goals since neonatal nurses are the primary communicators with parents of newborns. A survey completed by neonatal nurse management and bedside neonatal nurses at 25 hospitals across 14 states will be used to describe nursing staff knowledge of EHDI principles, EHDI outcomes, and to obtain feedback regarding education needs and preferences. This data will be utilized to present strategies, and tools to enhance neonatal nurses’ understanding of the value of hearing screening and the important role they play in EHDI programs.

Amy Boyer, R.N. has been passionate about newborns and NICU nursing ever since she can remember and is able to combine her passions by working with hospitals to establish newborn screening programs. She leads her team with experience and enthusiasm by sharing her knowledge. In Amy's bit of spare time, she is in hot pursuit of her MSN with a Leadership focus, and teaches NRP and STABLE. She also loves running, cycling, swimming, and hiking…anything outdoors. She is also a music buff!

Keithia Harding

Dr. Harding is a licensed and certified Audiologist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology. She received her Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree from the University of Maryland. Her clinical background includes working with patients of all ages in a large otolaryngology practice as well as private practice prior to joining the Peloton Screening Services division of Natus Medical Inc. as an Area Supervisor and working directly with Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Programs for multiple hospitals across several states. She also enjoys traveling, has visited over 33 countries to date, and has also lived abroad in Europe and Asia. She also believes in the importance of giving back, and her experiences include mission trips and other philanthropic endeavors in Mexico and Africa.
