Cued Language: Separating Facts from Myths

Cued Speech has been in existence for almost 60 years, yet it is not well understood. In the 2017 NCHAM EI Snapshot Survey of Family Perceptions, Needs, and Choices with families of DHH children ages 2-6, 13% of families used cueing as their primary mode of communication, however 57% of families reported receiving "Fair" or "Poor" quality of information about Cued Speech. These results indicate that there is a need for family-based organizations to receive and disseminate accurate and quality information about cued language. This presentation will share facts and dispel myths surrounding the use of cued language and highlight the differences in terminology with Cued Speech, cued language, and Cued American English.

  • Participants will be able to distinguish between correct and incorrect terminology relating to Cued Speech.
  • Participants will be able to list the differences between Cued Speech and cued language.
  • Participants will be able to identify some myths surrounding Cued Speech and cued language.
