Raising Teens with Hearing Loss: 2 Moms and 2 Strong Willed Daughters
Two families will share their unique experiences with cochlear implants and their outcomes as early teens. The participants will hear directly from the teens about success in a mainstream school, their challenges with hearing loss and the positive aspects of advocating for themselves. The parents will share their stories how each family utilized resources in order for both girls to be mainstreamed and active in a variety of social and extracurricular activities. The parents will also share about becoming active members in the EHDI programs for Nebraska and Kansas in assisting new parents to navigate the unknown waters of hearing loss. Parents and professionals will learn directly from experienced parents and teens that have overcome obstacles, achieved positive outcomes, and how professionals have impacted their journey through discovery to current outcomes.

Shelli Janning is the Program Coordinator for the Nebraska Hands & Voices Guide by Your Side program. Shelli has her Master’s Degree in Human Services and has worked in the field of Special Education for 11 years before devoting her time more specifically to the Deaf and hard of hearing population. She is very passionate about advocacy and self-empowerment. Shelli is married to Mark and they have two daughters, Jerzie is 15 and Brooke who is 13 and is hard of hearing. Brooke has a unilateral hearing loss and wore a hearing aid for several years until she received a Cochlear Implant in July 2019.

Tina Stuchlik

Tina Stuchlik began her career as a Speech-Language Pathologist after her daughter was diagnosed with profound hearing loss (Norah age 13). She is currently a board member of Sound Beginnings, appointed to the Kansas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and involved in the Kansas chapter of AG Bell. She is a certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist through AG Bell Academy. Tina has a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Emporia State University and a Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology from Wichita State University. She has previously worked as an early intervention provider, in an out-patient clinic, and is currently serving on the Butler County Special Education Interlocal Deaf Education Team.
