Using LSL Strategies to Foster Vocabulary Development
Parents are a child’s first teacher of language. Most vocabulary knowledge is acquired indirectly through daily interactions with adults, siblings, and peers that occur through conversation around routines, games, nursery rhymes, songs, and reading activity (Burns, Griffin & Snow, 1999, Landry& Smith, 2006) Literature suggests that children who are deaf or have a hearing loss struggle in vocabulary development and acquisition. A Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (LSLS) focusing on the development of language through listening can coach a family on the use and integration of strategies to aid in their child’s vocabulary development. It is critical that a family understand the necessity of focusing on word acquisition and gain confidence in their role as their child’s teacher. Through a cooperative and collaborative relationship with the parent, the LSLS can use the coaching model: joint planning, observation, action, reflection and feedback (Rush, Sheldon, 2011) to foster knowledge and mastery of LSL strategies. Targeting an increase in both quantity and quality of vocabulary with known strategies that rely on the child’s development of language through listening and increase their capacity of auditory memory and comprehension. This presentation will include demonstrations featuring strategies that focus on the inclusion of coaching to enhance vocabulary acquisition. Facilitated online surveys to share information about what participants are currently using for vocabulary tracking, reporting, and intervention. Discussions to generate ideas for incorporating LSL strategies into practice while coaching families currently on one’s caseload.

Michelle is an experienced Listening and Spoken Language Specialist and maintains teacher certification in the area of special education. Michelle provides Early Intervention therapy services to families in person and via internet therapy.
