The Grey Areas of Hearing-Deaf Interactions
When people with diverse cultures, languages, and disabilities interact, whether it is on a professional or personal basis, conflict is bound to happen one way or another. There are many grey areas, awkward moments, and challenging situations. In the context of early intervention, many factors in hearing-deaf interactions are at play. This workshop is designed for hearing/deaf professionals, hearing/deaf families, and hearing/deaf siblings interested in addressing the elephant in the room, which is the fact that deaf people cannot access sounds the same way as hearing people do. Situations that are simply not black and white are typically the most avoided topics in hearing-deaf interactions. The presenters, who are deaf and hearing, will talk about the dynamics, challenges, and proposed tools for navigating the grey areas of hearing-deaf interactions.
- Participants will be able to explain how unstated assumptions that govern interactions between hearing and deaf people can be disempowering and alienating, and how being proactive in making different choices can achieve meaningful inclusion.
- Participants will be able to list solutions that may ameliorate the challenges inherent in these situations.
- Participants will be able to demonstrate new ways of behaving and interacting that produce more favorable outcomes in making everyone feel included.

Leala currently holds two positions as the postdoctoral research associate at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the family outreach educator at California School for the Deaf, Fremont. Leala's family is composed of a mixture of deaf and hearing members. They enjoy exploring creative solutions to maximize inclusion and develop meaningful relationships with each other.

Tiffany Wilson

Tiffany currently works in early childhood education at California School for the Deaf, Fremont. She also provides private practice counseling and focuses much of her clinical work in the areas of autism, trauma-informed therapy and the LGBTQ community. At CSD, her position provides behavior support, social emotional learning and counseling to students 0-7 years of age. She also provides family support groups, workshops/trainings for both staff and parents as well as being the liaison between CSD and outside services providers.
