Exploring the Benefits of Using Online ASL Immersion With Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) Language Models.

When families first discover their child is deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), it can be an overwhelming rush of emotions. Families are usually presented with a medical or technological “fix”. What is typically missing is the DHH “perspective/introduction”. Most families are not fortunate enough to be exposed to DHH adults. Generally, the first DHH person that a family meets is their DHH child. Families are unaware of the amazing culture and language of the Deaf Community and how they could benefit from it. In this presentation, we will share our experiences providing online ASL immersion with DHH Language Models. Most families have tight busy schedules and more than one child to care for. Many families want to learn American Sign Language (ASL) -- more and more they are recognizing their child’s need for both English and ASL. However, there are two main barriers that families face: TIME and ACCESS. With the growth of the internet, online DHH interactions are now conveniently available and easily accessible to those with internet access (smart phones, tablets & computers). Recently, families are receiving online DHH engagement services through their IFSPs and IEPs. Participants will view video clips of interactions between selected children and DHH adults; as well as analyze and discuss the potential benefits from these interactions, such as improved ASL skills, improved self-esteem, and a richer self-perception. A discussion of the book Turning the Tide: Making Life Better for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Schoolchildren by Gina A. Oliva & Linda Risser Lytle and the live online immersion tool called SignOn, will demonstrate that DHH children, as well as families, need exposure and interaction with other individuals who are also DHH, both peers and adults.

  • Participants will be able to explain the importance of why DHH Adult Language Models for DHH youth are necessary for language development and social well being.
  • Participants will be able to explain why easy access to the Deaf Community for parents aids in the support, knowledge, and encouragement needed to raise confident DHH youth.
  • Participants will be able to name 3 reasons why DHH engagement improves the lives of deaf children with information discussed from the book and the recorded videos.
