Together We Hear - Digging Deeper into the Needs of the Spanish Speaking Population with Hearing Loss
Latinos are currently the largest cultural minority group in the United States. Currently, 8% of the Spanish speaking population in the United States has hearing loss. The total general number of Latinos is expected to increase dramatically. As the general Latino population increases, so will the Spanish speaking population with hearing loss. This poses an immense need in learning and understanding the unique needs of this population particularly those whose first language is Spanish. This session will review some brief demographics of the Spanish speaking population in the US as well as some of the common challenges providers may face when working with this unique population. We will also identify the differences in cultural perspectives and its effects on families’ decisions in hearing healthcare. We will review the importance of understanding cultural sensitivity and discuss strategies on how to work towards cultural competency. The session will focus on the 5 critical questions providers may consider when providing services to this population and how to integrate these questions in practical ways in their clinic. Although it is important to provide clinical care and deliver services in their native language, it is even more important to capture and understand the culture. This presentation will introduce MED-EL’s first bilingual program in the industry and the reason behind the creation of this unique program. This session will be valuable to families and clinicians as it will provide an improved perspective on support services and programs, such as our HearPeers Latino program, that are now available to use when serving this unique population.

Michael is a speech-language pathologist and a certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. He received his certification in auditory-verbal therapy in 2002. He has focused his career on teaching children with hearing loss to listen and speak in various settings including early childhood programs, schools, hospitals, private practice, and cochlear implant centers. Michael served as the Director of the Speech Clinic and Director of Intervention Services at the Center for Hearing and Speech in Houston, TX from 2005 to 2012. He was an adjunct instructor at The University of Houston from 2010 to 2012. He served as the Principal of the Mama Lere Hearing School in the Bill Wilkerson Center at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN between 2012 and 2016. Currently he is an employee of Med-El as a Consumer Engagement Program Manager. He is the author of Dual-Language Learning for Children with Hearing Loss.

Myriam De La Asuncion

Dr. De La Asuncion is an audiologist and received her doctorate degree from the University of Florida in 2005. Since then, she has focused her career in working with children with cochlear implants and their families in conjunction with multidisciplinary teams in various clinical settings such as Beth Israel Medical Center/NYEE CI Program, Cochlear Americas, and the Barton G. Kids Hear Now CI Program at the University of Miami. Prior to joining MED-EL she worked over 15 years as a cochlear implant audiologist. She has a passion for the field and in her current role at MED-EL, as the Program Manager for the Bilingual Programs since 2016. She continues to utilize her clinical expertise, counseling, and education to assist Spanish speaking populations in providing appropriate support to candidates, recipients, and professionals that serve them.

Annie Rodriguez

Dr. Annie Rodriguez is an audiologist and received her doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University in 2014. Since graduation, Dr. Rodriguez has primarily worked with the pediatric population with a focus on cochlear implants in various clinical settings. She worked at the University of Miami where she assisted families through their hearing journey in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team. Dr. Rodriguez's passion continues to grow in her current role at MED-EL as a Consumer Engagement Manager for the Bilingual Programs. Her knowledge of the Hispanic culture, clinical expertise and Spanish helps assist the Spanish speaking population through optimal support to candidates, recipients and hearing health professionals.
