A Parent-Led Model for Conducting Targeted Hospital Visits
Although newborn hearing screening has been routinely provided for more than 20 years, some hospitals consistently fail to meet benchmarks for inpatient refer rates and/or outpatient return rates. These hospitals often need more than a routine site visit. As part of our federal HRSA grant activities, an Arizona EHDI quality improvement team consisting of a parent leader, consulting audiologist and a Health Educator with the Department of Health took a new and innovative approach to providing assistance to those hospitals. The goal of the project was to develop a method of providing technical assistance in a replicable way that can be generalized across settings and states resulting in lasting improvement. Part of the premise for the effort is the 1-3-6+ state goals which recognize the + that parent to parent support provides. Parents as leaders ensures that the goal of the screening program remains on the child and family, their experience and the ultimate goal of early identification. During this presentation you will learn about the roles of the QI team, how to identify key hospital players, how data was collected, the communication strategies used with hospitals, QI measures, data collected and lessons learned.
- Participants will be able to understand the importance and value of parent leadership in maintaining quality hearing screening programs.
- Participants will be able to identify challenges encountered by the QI team.
- Participants will be able to replicate a virtual model for helping hospitals not meeting benchmarks in their state.

Randi consults on a variety of EHDI related projects and serves as adjunct assistant professor at A.T. Still University. Prior to that she worked as a consulting audiologist for The EAR Foundation of Arizona and Arizona's EHDI Program since 1998. Her role included the implementation of newborn hearing and early childhood screening programs with an emphasis on program quality, systems development and best practices. During that time she served on NCHAM’s Technical Assistance Network, assisting states in Region X. Randi maintains her role as lead audiologist on the Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum (NHSTC) project and has co-authored several research articles involving newborn and early childhood screening.
Randi holds doctorate of audiology, is state licensed in Arizona and a member of AAA, ASHA and the ArSHA. She also serves as director of the Arizona Special Olympics Healthy Hearing Program.

Najwa Ghattas

Najwa Ghattas lives in Phoenix, Arizona with her husband Will and is the mom to three children including Samantha (12) and Matthew (9) both born with a bilateral profound sensioneural hearing loss. Najwa Ghattas holds a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and a Post Baccalaureate in Elementary Education. In 2014, Najwa became the Executive Director and Guide By Your Side Program Coordinator for Arizona Hands & Voices. Her journey led her to the EAR Foundation of Arizona where she spent two years as Lead Follow Up Coordinator for the Newborn Hearing Screening Program on behalf of the Department of Health Services working hard to meet the 1-3-6 EHDI goals. She has now transitioned into a new position as Outreach Specialist focusing her efforts on hospital and provider education. Her passion now lies in improving the messaging and family experience from the beginning, starting with the screening.
