This is My Story: A Qualitative Exploration of How IPV Survivors Make Sense of Their Abuse

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is serious and has remained a significant issue across the years in the United States. About 6/6% of women in the U.S. have reported experiencing physical and/or sexual aggression within the last 12 months, and 37.3% of women reported experiencing physical and/or sexual aggression as having occurred at some point in their lives (Bott, Guedes, Ruiz-Celis, & Mendoza, 2019). Yet despite some of the similarities in the reports of IPV survivors, Whiting, Oka, and Fife (2012) not that different people may respond differently to the same situation; one person may even appraise a situation differently at different times. The purpose of this article is to further explore the narratives of interviewed IPV survivors when violence is perpetrated and identify any appraisal distortions.
