Developing Consensus for Smartphone Based CMV Knowledge Questions and Educational Messages
We are designing a prenatal CMV education program that uses a novel instructional text-messaging technique. There exists a CMV knowledge gap among pregnant women. Women will sign up at our prenatal clinics via a QR code. They will be messaged at their first visit, periodically through pregnancy and 2 weeks post-partum. Messages will consist of CMV knowledge questions, followed by short educational messages and prevention tips. Post-partum, participants will also receive a message asking if the baby passed the newborn hearing screening and if the baby was tested for CMV. We will use aggregate data to measure whether women enrolled in this program increased their knowledge of CMV from baseline. The goal of this Instructional Session is to electronically survey conference attendees in order to generate 1) the most effective questions for assessing CMV knowledge and 2) the most effective short educational messages. We will use a modified Delphi Method, a technique that uses several rounds of polling of experts, with the purpose of reaching a consensus. The experts are all the parent, researcher, healthcare provider, public health and policy attendees, being stakeholders in efforts to improve CMV education. We will use standard software (e.g. Survey Monkey or Google Survey) that attendees will access on their smartphones by scanning a QR code. A pool of candidate questions will be refined in real time over 3 or 4 rounds, yielding approximately 5 questions and 5 messages that can be used in our prenatal CMV education program, and in similar programs. The survey rounds will be followed by a brief open discussion to explore optimal digital educational techniques for parents and future parents. This session will provide learners with ideas to develop their own digital or smartphone based CMV education programs. The session will run approximately 75 minutes.

Dr. Sood is a practicing Pediatric Infectious Disease physician and a Professor of Pediatrics. He is an investigator in several NIH-sponsored trials for treatment and follow-up of babies with congenital CMV. His current research focuses on improving recognition and treatment of congenital infections including CMV, Zika and toxoplasmosis. One of his primary goals to increase awareness of these infections among obstetricians and among women of child-bearing age.
