Updated Pediatric Audiology Learning Opportunities in 2014, “Navigating EHDI from Home”
Universal Newborn Hearing screening is going into its 2nd decade of implementation and there still is a shortage of qualified Pediatric Audiologists who serve infants with hearing loss or who are identified at risk for hearing loss. The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and The National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) have been providing Pediatric Audiology Diagnostic and Amplification Courses to more than 900 Audiologists across the nation to provide theory and hands on training regarding Pediatric Audiology. The American Academy of Audiology (AAA) has developed a specialty certification in Pediatrics to not only increase the number of audiologists with this specialty but to better identify these individuals. The American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) has developed position statements regarding the role of the Audiologist with infants and children. The Joint Committee for Infant Hearing (JCIH) has developed a standard of care and continues to expand on the role of the Audiologist within the EHDI system. Finally, the Center for Disease and Control (CDC) has supported the development of a database of Pediatric Audiologists across the United States to improve access to these specialists for families with children at risk for, or identified with, hearing loss. With reduced funding for training workshops and the inability of Audiologists to leave their busy work settings, more Audiologists are turning to the Internet. NCHAM Web based trainings or webinars are becoming Audiologists best option for fine-tuning their skills from the comfort of their home. This presentation will focus on new web-based resources available for the Pediatric Audiologist to expand their knowledge base in pediatrics and to navigate EHDI.
- Discuss new learning opportunities on the www.infanthearing.org website that will enhance their pediatric audiology practices in 2014.
- Identify 3 social media opportunities for Pediatric audiologists to enhance their clinical practices.
- Choose updated family focused websites and social media services for their families with infants and toddlers who have hearing loss to strengthen learning and compliance.

Dr. Ditty is a pediatric audiologist with extensive experience and expertise in Early Hearing
Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs. Her career spans over 35 years and includes initiating newborn hearing screening and hearing aid legislation while implementing EHDI activities in Louisiana and Texas. Dr. Ditty has been associated with the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) for more than 20 years. She has been the coordinator of the NCHAM national pediatric audiology diagnostic workshops and served as a member of the Technical Assistance Network for the states of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana over the last decade. Dr. Ditty works on a variety of projects related to early childhood screening and pediatric audiology, such as the Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum and issues related to program quality, financing, and sustainability. Dr. Ditty has authored and contributed to publications related to EHDI, as well as presented extensively at local, national, and international forums on numerous topics related to EHDI.
